ecliptic

The Sun, day by day, appears to move along an imaginary fixed line against the stars, completing one revolution each year. The line is called the ecliptic, and the effect is actually caused by the movement of the Earth around the Sun.

The other planets and their satellites tend to appear close to this line, because the solar system revolves roughly on a single plane, called the plane of the ecliptic.
